Welcome to Porlock Recreation Ground

Thanks to everyone who responded to our recent call for ideas which was initiated by the generous legacy left by Susan Taylor to the Porlock Recreation Ground. We have a long way to go with evaluating these ideas but it is already clear that the viability of some of them (such as a swimming pool) may be partly dependent on long-term staffing by volunteers.

Considering this and other Rec activities, such as the Country Fair on 6th August, we are keen to find more volunteers. If you wish to help in any way we would like to hear from you and would be grateful if you could complete our brief volunteering questionnaire - click here for the questionnaire and more information.

Please spread the word to family and friends asking them to fill in the questionnaire either online or by completing a paper version available from Porlock Visitor Centre, the Post Office, CostCutter or Clive Downs the Butcher. The closing date for all questionnaires is Friday 2nd June. Paper questionnaires should be returned to the Visitor Centre.

To be clear, no decisions have yet been made regarding a pool or other projects and as part of our evaluation process we will be circulating a more detailed questionnaire at a later date.

Set in some 5.5 acres, Porlock Recreation Ground is without question the green centre of this popular Exmoor village. Situated in a conservation area and within easy reach of the entire village, the Recreation Ground contributes significantly to the social and leisure needs of residents and visitors of all age groups.

Facilities include a well-equipped children’s playground, 2 football pitches, a cricket pitch, floodlit tennis court & multisport court and a dog exercise field, as well as a large pavilion with a meeting and function room, kitchen, changing rooms, showers, disabled toilets and baby changing room.

The Porlock and District Bowls Club is situated beside the Recreation Ground.

A boules court is planned for 2017 providing planning consent is granted.

The pavilion, marquees, football and cricket pitches are available for hire. You can check availability of the pavilion and pitches on our Bookings Diary page. Costs and how to make a booking are also on this page.

Tucked behind the pavilion is the peaceful Porlock Garden of Remembrance commemorating those who fell in both World Wars.

Porlock Recreation Ground is a registered charity with the aim of preserving, maintaining and improving the facilities for the ongoing benefit of the village and local area.

The annual running costs for the Recreation Ground are around £15000.  It is funded mainly through the income raised at the annual Country Fair supplemented by rents and hire charges from regular and occasional users of the various facilities.
